Another Sonos update coming: iOS4 and iOS5 devices no longer compatible

Innovating the ultimate home listening experience

We are reaching out to inform you we will discontinue Sonos control support for iOS4 and iOS5 devices, including the first generation iPad, iPhone 3G and the second and third generation iPod touch.

Reason:
Sonos continues to invest in their vision and are committed to delivering customers all the music on earth in the simplest, most intuitive ways at home. Committed to continually improve the home music listening experience, Sonos must make decisions that balance their need to innovate with a desire to maintain support for older devices – in this instance, those running iOS4 and iOS5.

Change:
In the coming months, Sonos will release a software update to all Sonos customers with new features for the system. From this point on, iOS4 and iOS5 devices, will no longer function as Sonos controllers.
When this update is installed on a device in the household, the Sonos system will no longer be able to connect to the devices mentioned. The update is irreversible.

Support:
Consumers that have questions can be directed to Sonos.com/support for more information.

Other ways to control:
Download the app on another device or update to any of the following compatible controller devices:

  • iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS6 or higher
  • Android phone and tablets running Android 2.1 and higher
  • Desktop controllers: Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or greater, PC running Windows® XP SP3 or higher, Windows Vista™, Windows 7, Windows 8.

All my tech is ios5 including my IPad 1 ands my iPods and phones. I bought a new Sonos Play5 and can't play it straight away. My son is the only one with an iPhone 5 . Will take it back tomorrow.
Hi John- I know what you mean! I was not happy either when I found out that my iPad (version 1) and older iPod Touch would no longer operate as Sonos controllers. But after talking with the Sonos representative, he convinced me that this now the world we live in. Software based control platforms change- and as Sonos (and others companies too) offer more features and capabilities, the old devices with old operating systems must fall by the wayside. Sonos does have this information posted on their website so people know up front what devices and software versions they must have for compatibility. I always make sure my customers have the proper devices (Android or iOS) before selling them any software-based control system. Here is a work-around- until you buy new devices with the latest software, you can control your Sonos system using their computer controller. It is downloadable to your computer from Sonos' website here https://sonos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a... I would suggest using the PC/MAC interface at the link above to control your Sonos system until such time you can purchase an updated iOS/Android device- Sonos is by far the best, more reliable wireless music system on the market. It would be unfortunate for your music enjoyment if you settle for a lesser product. Best- Doug Hear More Music LLC
